La Gomera, halfway between El Hierro, La Palma and Tenerife, is the second smallest island of the archipelago. It has an extension of 369 km2 and its maximum altitude reaches 1487 metres above sea level, known as Alto de Garajonay. The island has a population of 21,000 people. The Garajonay National Park is the natural protagonist of the island and covers a large part of the island. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
The most important city on the island is known as "La Villa", San Sebastián de la Gomera. The famous Genoese sailor departed from the port of this city shortly before arriving in the East Indies.
