5 places to visit – Tenerife

1. MASCA

The “lost village” is located in the north-west of the island, near the hills “Montes de Teno”. The beautiful village is located amongst impressive rock formations and lush vegetation. Until 1991 there was no road to Masca, but today the village can be reached by a winding road. This isolation has contributed to make Masca the best example of typical Canarian architecture. Masca is also a paradise for hikers who can walk through the canyons to the bay. The bay was once a hideaway for pirates. From there you can take a boat to Los Gigantes if you don’t want to return to Masca by foot (it takes several hours). You can also enjoy this unique landscape from the “Mirador de la Cruz de Hilda” in Teno.

The small picturesque fishing village Garachico is a wonderful destination for a trip, because it offers the opportunity to walk through the narrow streets to admire Canarian architecture, visit the small churches or relax in the natural pools “Piscinas Naturales El Caletón”. The history of the idyllic village was not always happy, because its heyday as the main port of the island ended abruptly in 1706 when the eruption of the volcano “Montaña Negra” took place and the harbor and large parts of the village were destroyed by lava flows. One of the few buildings that survived the eruption is the castle “Castillo de San Miguel”, the oldest building in the village, which was built in 1575. Masca also suffered many disease outbreaks and floods. Nowadays, nothing reminds you of the dark past of Masca and you can relax and enjoy this little idyll!

3. MACIZO DE ANAGA

The mountain massif “Macizo de Anaga” covers a large area in the north of Tenerife and offers one of the most diverse landscapes of the island. Large parts of the area belong to the natural park “Parque Rural de Anaga”. In Anaga there is a unique flora and fauna – some species are extremely rare. The area offers numerous hiking trails and breathtaking views. On the coast, the vegetation is sparse, but in the mountains, where the trade winds are trapped, there are magnificent green laurel forests. In addition, Anaga has a great historical significance, because the most important discoveries of the remains of the aboriginal inhabitants (the Guanches) were made there. There were found mummies, mummified animals and a stone with inscriptions. Many caves with engravings of the original inhabitants are also scattered throughout Anaga.

4. ACANTILADO DE LOS GIGANTES

The cliff “Acantilado de Los Gigantes” (“the giant cliff”) is a majestic sight on the west coast of Tenerife and already impressed the natives of Tenerife, who called it the “Wall to Hell”. Nowadays, these formations of volcanic origin are still fascinating with their vertical walls that reach heights between 300 and 600 meters. But not only nature lovers are fascinated by the cliff. In its surroundings there are located rich fishing grounds, a paradise for divers and anglers. Excursion boats also head for the cliff offering the possibility to admire this natural wonder from below!

San Cristóbal de La Laguna, known as La Laguna, is the second largest city on the island after the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The city, that was the capital of the island until 1723, is beautifully nestled in the green countryside beneath the mountain massif “Macizo de Anaga”. The charming city center was declared UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. This decision is based on the fact that La Laguna is the only example of a colonial city without defensive walls and that the planning of the city from the 15th century is still almost completely intact. The city is praised as the “Florence of the Canary Islands”, because there are many old buildings, churches and convents. The symbol of the city is the stone tower of the church “Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción” from the Renaissance and you should also visit the neoclassical Cathedral of La Laguna. La Laguna has long been the cultural center of the Canary Islands and the first university of the islands was established there (today there is another one on Gran Canaria). La Laguna is the perfect destination for those who love historic buildings and museums!
