The impressive and beautiful nature of Tenerife has so much to offer. After visiting the Teide, there is still a lot of things to see. We have selected 5 places in the north of the island that you should not miss (if you want some more, have a look at our post about the valley of La Orotava!).

1. RUTA DEL BOSQUE ENCANTADO, ANAGA
An enchanting forest with tons of green vegetation

If you love nature, do not leave the island without visiting this area of the Parque Rural de Anaga. The laurel forest is a type of forest that predominated in Europe and Africa millions of years ago, but nowadays you will only find it in very few places on earth. And one of this places is Tenerife! The beautiful route through the lush green nature is very easy and also gives you some beautiful views of the sea, specially from the viewpoint “Cabezo del Tejo”. But note that the route has a special protection and before visiting this area you will have to get a free permission from the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.

Falls Sie ein Naturfan sind, verlassen Sie nicht die Insel ohne diesen Teil des Naturparks Parque Rural de Anaga besucht zu haben. Der Lorbeerwald ist eine Waldart, die vor Millionen von Jahren in Europa und Afrika dominierte, aber die heutzutage nur noch in sehr wenigen Orten auf der Erde zu finden ist. Und einer dieser Orte ist Teneriffa! Die schöne Wanderroute durch die üppige grüne Natur ist nicht beschwerlich und bietet Ihnen auch einige schöne Ausblicke auf das Meer, vor allem von dem Aussichtspunkt “Cabezo del Tejo” aus. Aber beachten Sie, dass diese Route einen besonderen Schutz genießt. Vor einem Besuch müssen Sie noch die kostenlose Genehmigung des Cabildo Insular de Tenerife einholen.

Si te gusta la naturaleza, no puedes marcharte de la isla sin visitar esta zona del Parque Rural de Anaga. La laurisilva es un tipo de bosque que predominó en Europa y África hace millones de años, pero hoy en día sólo se puede encontrar en muy pocos lugares de la tierra. ¡Y uno de estos lugares es Tenerife! La hermosa ruta a través de la naturaleza verde y exuberante es muy fácil y además te da la oportunidad de disfrutar de unas hermosas vistas al mar, especialmente desde el mirador Cabezo del Tejo. Pero ten en cuenta que la ruta tiene una protección especial y antes de visitar esta zona, tendrás que obtener un permiso gratuito del Cabildo Insular de Tenerife.

2. PUNTA DE TENO, BUENAVISTA DEL NORTE
A winding road leads to the perfect place for spectacular views

Are you looking for a special and quiet place? Then take the difficult and winding road to Punta de Teno in Buenavista del Norte. The difficult access will be definitely worth it. You will not find any houses in this area and at first sight it might seem nothing special. But when you finally arrive at Punta de Teno next to the lighthouse, you will be able to experience stunning views to the sea and the islands of La Gomera and La Palma. And the sunsets are magical!

Sind Sie auf der Suche nach einem besonderen und ruhigen Ort? Dann nehmen Sie die schwierige und kurvenreiche Straße nach Punta de Teno in Buenavista del Norte. Sie werden keine Häuser in dieser Gegend finden und am Anfang wird es Ihnen vielleicht ein bisschen trostlos vorkommen. Aber wenn Sie endlich bei Punta de Teno und seinem Leuchtturm angekommen sind, werden Sie in der Lage sein einen atemberaubenden Blick auf das Meer und die Inseln La Gomera und La Palma zu genießen. Und die Sonnenuntergänge sind magisch!

¿Está buscando un lugar especial y tranquilo? Entonces puedes tomar la carretera difícil y sinuosa hacia Punta de Teno en Buenavista del Norte. La dificultad del acceso sind duda valdrá la pena. No encontrarás ninguna casa en esta zona y a primera vista puede parecer poco especial. Pero cuando por fin llegues a Punta de Teno y a su faro, ¡podrás disfrutar de unas impresionantes vistas al mar y a las islas de La Gomera y La Palma! ¡Y la puesta del sol es mágica desde aquí!

3. CUEVA DEL VIENTO, ICOD DE LOS VINOS
Explore the inside of Europe’s largest lava tube

This spectacular lava tube has a length of 17 kilometres, becoming Europe’s largest lava tube and the 4th largest in the world. When lava flows, the exterior solidifies rapidly while the liquid in the interior continues to flow. During this process there can be originated cavities – and then you have a lava tube! If you want to feel like a real explorer, you should take part in a guided excursion into the inside of the lava tube, learning more about its formation and the fauna that inhabits it.

Dieser spektakuläre Lava-Tunnel hat eine Länge von 17 Kilometern und ist Europas größter Lava-Tunnel und der viertgrößte in der Welt. Bei einer Eruption, erkaltet der äußere Bereich des Lavastroms recht schnell, aber im Inneren fließt die Lava weiter. Auf diese Weise können Hohlräume entstehen – und dann haben Sie einen Lava-Tunnel! Wenn Sie sich wie ein echter Entdecker fühlen wollen, sollten Sie an einem geführten Ausflug in das Innere des Lava-Tunnels teilnehmen, wo sie auch mehr über seine Entstehung und die Fauna die ihn bewohnt lernen können.

Este tubo de lava espectacular tiene una longitud de 17 kilómetros, convirtiéndose en el tubo de lava más grande de Europa y el cuarto más grande en el mundo. Cuando los flujos de lava salen al exterior, la zona exterior se solidifica rápidamente, mientras que el líquido en el interior sigue fluyendo. Durante este proceso se pueden originar cavidades – ¡y entonces se origina un tubo de lava! Si quieres sentirte como un verdadero explorador, debes participar en una excursión guiada al interior del tubo de lava, donde va aprenderás más sobre su formación y la fauna que lo habita.

4. PISCINAS NATURALES EL CALETÓN, GARACHICO
Beautiful natural pools next to the historic town of Garachico

Garachico is a very interesting town with a rich history and interesting cultural monuments, like the castle Castillo de San Miguel that should protect the town from pirates. In the 16th and 17th century it was the most important harbor was heavily destroyed by the eruption of Volcán Trevejo in 1706. Only a small part of the city and the two oldest buildings, the church and the monastery of San Francisco survived the eruption. But this volcanic eruption also led to the formation of the natural pools El Caletón with beautiful clear water. After a refreshing bath you should walk through the enchanting streets of this fisher town or have a meal in one of its many restaurants!

Garachico ist eine sehr interessante Stadt mit einer reichen Geschichte und interessanten Kulturdenkmälern, wie zum Beispiel die Burg Castillo de San Miguel, die die Stadt vor Piraten schützen sollte. Im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert war es der wichtigste Hafen der Insel und hatte einen geschäftiges Wirtschaftsleben, hauptsächlich wegen dem Weinhandel mit England. Aber die Stadt wurde stark zerstört durch den Ausbruch des Vulkans Trevejo im Jahre 1706 und nur ein kleiner Teil der Stadt sowie die beiden ältesten Gebäude, die Kirche und das Kloster von San Francisco, überstanden die Eruption. Aber dieser Vulkanausbruch führte auch zu der Bildung der natürlichen Schwimmbecken El Caletón mit schönem klaren Wasser. Nach einem erfrischenden Bad sollten Sie durch die zauberhaften Gassen dieses Fischerdorf wandern oder eine Mahlzeit in einem der vielen Restaurants genießen!

Garachico es una ciudad muy interesante con una rica historia y monumentos de gran interés cultural, como el Castillo de San Miguel, que tenía la función de proteger a la ciudad de los piratas. En el siglo XVI y XVII era el puerto más importante de la isla y tenía una agitada vida económica, debido principalmente a la exportación de vino a Inglaterra. Pero la ciudad fue fuertemente destruida por la erupción del Volcán Trevejo en 1706. Sólo una pequeña parte de la ciudad y los dos edificios más antiguos, la iglesia y el monasterio de San Francisco, sobrevivieron la erupción. Pero esta erupción volcánica también dio lugar a la formación de las piscinas naturales El Caletón con aguas limpias y transparentes. Después de un refrescante baño puedes caminar por las encantadoras calles de este pueblo de pescadores o disfrutar una comida en uno de sus muchos restaurantes.

5. DRAGO MILENARIO, ICOD DE LOS VINOS
Visit this famous and thousand-year-old dragon tree

The dragon trees are one of the most iconic natural species of the Canary Islands. In the past the aboriginal inhabitants thought that these were sacred trees and when you see their bizarre forms it is easy to understand why. You will find many of them on the islands, but the largest and most famous is located in Icod de los Vinos. The Drago Milenario has a height of 25 meters and without the roots it weights up to 150 tons. It was once thought that the three was more than five thousand years old, but recent studies have shown that the correct age is located between 800 and 1000 years. In 1985 the tree was “renovated” and a ventilator was installed in its inside to prevent the formation of mushrooms and make sure that it will be there for another thousand years!

Die Drachenbäume sind eine der bekanntesten Plflanzenarten der Kanarischen Inseln. In der Vergangenheit waren die kanarischen Ureinwohner davon überzeugt, dass dies heilige Bäume seien und wenn Sie ihre bizarren Formen sehen, ist es leicht zu verstehen warum. Sie werden auf den Inseln viele von diesen Bäumen finden, aber der größte und bekannteste befindet sich in Icod de los Vinos. Der Drago Milenario hat eine Höhe von 25 Metern und ohne die Wurzeln wiegt er bis zu 150 Tonnen. Früher dachte man, dass der Baum mehr als fünftausend Jahre alt sei, aber neuere Studien haben gezeigt, dass das korrekte Alter zwischen 800 und 1000 Jahre liegt. Im Jahr 1985 wurde der Baum “renoviert” und ein Ventilator wurde in seinem Inneren installiert, um die Bildung von Pilzen zu verhindern, und sicherzustellen, dass er für weitere tausend Jahre existiert!

Los dragos son una de las especies naturales más emblemáticas de las Islas Canarias. En el pasado, los habitantes aborígenes pensaban que se trataba de árboles sagrados y cuando veas las formas extrañas que adaptan sus troncos y ramas es fácil entender por qué. Encontráras muchos dragos en las islas, pero el más grande y más famoso se encuentra en Icod de los Vinos. El Drago Milenario tiene una altura de 25 metros y sin las raíces pesa hasta 150 toneladas. Hasta hace poco se pensó que el árbol tenía una antigüedad de cinco mil años, pero estudios recientes han demostrado que la edad correcta se encuentra entre 800 y 1000 años. En 1985, el árbol fue “reformado” y se instaló un ventilador en su interior para evitar la formación de hongos, ¡así que todo está preparado para que el Drago Milenario viva por lo menos otros mil años más!
