WHEN DO YOU CELEBRATE WHAT?

1. NOCHEBUENA

For Spaniards and Canarians Christmas starts officially with Nochebuena (Christmas Eve) on December 24. The entire family gathers for a special dinner with lots of delicious dishes and celebrates a happy and joyful family reunion (note: the presents are not exchanged at Nochebuena and neither on the 25th. The kids will have to wait for a few weeks more!). Some families also visit the Misa del Gallo (Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve) at midnight and sing villancicos (Christmas songs) at the church.

Nochebuena – Weihnachten beginnt offiziell mit Nochebuena am 24. Dezember.

2. DÍA DE LOS SANTOS INOCENTES

The next Christmas celebration in Spain as well as in Latin America is the Día de los Santos Inocentes (Holy Innocent’s Day) on December 25. Its origin lays in the Bible and commemorates the killing of baby boys that was ordered by King Herod when he heard that a new King of Israel (Jesus) had been born. From this religious background there has evolved a funny celebration, where people play jokes (“inocentadas”) on each other, quite similar to April Fool’s Day. The most popular jokes are sticking a paper puppet to the back of another person, exchanging salt and sugar and even the media traditionally tries to fool its viewers and readers on this day.

3. NOCHEVIEJA

The next important celebration is Nochevieja (New Year’s Eve), that can be celebrated with friends, family or both. The Canarians gather at the plazas, at parties or at home to count the last seconds until the new year. If you want to have a lucky start into the new year, you should adopt the Spanish tradition of eating twelve grapes during the last twelve chimes of the clock. And of course the Canarians also celebrate with fireworks and champagne!

4. DÍA DE LOS REYES MAGOS

On January 5 there takes place one of the favorite celebrations of every Spanish kid. In almost every town in Spain and of course also on the Canary Islands there is a Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (Three King’s Parade), where the three kings ride through the streets on their camels giving candy to the children. January 6 is the Día de los Reyes Magos. In the morning the family will traditionally eat the Rosca de Reyes and the children will finally receive their presents (if they have been good!).

WHAT DO YOU EAT?
Truchas, roscón de reyes, mazapán, polvorones and many more!

The food is extremely important during the Christmas season. The most important dinners are the ones at Nochebuena, Nochevieja and Día de Reyes. The restaurants all over the islands decorate their rooms and serve the best Christmas food. Fish is specially popular in the Canarian cuisine, but you will also find other festive dishes, like turkey, lamb, and ham. This can be accompanied with good Canarian or Spanish wine and champagne. And do not forget the papas arrugadas con mojo! But the reals stars of the Christmas cuisine are of course the sweets. The stars of the Canarian sweets are the truchas, a fried mixture of flour, sweet potato, sugar, lemon and almonds covered with powdered sugar, that can be bought in bakeries and supermarkets (or made at home – here you will find a recipe). Other typical sweets that you will have to try are turrón, mazapán, polvorones, mantecados and the rosca de Reyes on January 6.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Go to the beach, visit nativity scenes, go hiking or enjoy a Christmas concert – everything is possible!

The best thing about Christmas on the Canary Islands is that you will not only be able to enjoy the Christmas spirit. Trough the entire year you can go to the beach and enjoy the sunshine, go hiking and enjoy the extraordinary nature, practice a big range of sports and so much more (check out this post for more inspiration!). If you are looking for some seasonal activities, you should visit some nativity scenes. The Canarians have adopted the tradition of the Christmas tree, but the nativity scenes are still much more popular. Almost every family has an own nativity scene as well as the different towns and cities, that display real works of art. On Gran Canaria you will find the most popular nativity scene, the Sand Nativity Scene on the beach Playa de las Canteras. And Christmas time is also a perfect time for concerts and special events, that are celebrated all over the seven islands.
