The Canary Islands are the perfect place to celebrate New Year. The pleasant climate offers the perfect conditions to receive the new year relaxing in the sunshine on one of the beautiful beaches of the Canaries. On the 31st December there are options for every taste. Many luxury hotels organize gala dinners, there are New Year’s Eve parties in bars and clubs and many towns and cities organize fireworks and parties. As elsewhere in the world, New Year’s Eve is celebrated with champagne and fireworks, yet there is a Spanish tradition that is also very popular on the Canary Islands. The tradition of the “doce uvas de la suerte” (“the twelve grapes of luck”) began in the 19th century within the Spanish middle and upper classes, who celebrated “Nochevieja” with champagne and wine grapes. In 1909 the tradition was adopted by a majority of the population. This year there was a large grape surplus and Spanish farmers from Alicante promoted the “grapes of luck” in order to sell their crops. Over the time, the grapes became a New Year’s tradition and today they are almost mandatory. The grapes symbolize prosperity and according to superstition they give good luck. Each person gets twelve grapes that are eaten in the last minutes of the finishing year with the last twelve chimes of the clock. And who did not choke in the attempt, can now wish a Happy New Year to all!

Wie überall auf der Welt, wird mit Champagner und Feuerwerk gefeiert, doch es gibt eine spanische Tradition die auch auf den Kanarischen Inseln weit verbreitet ist. Die Tradition der “doce uvas de la suerte” (“die zwölf Weintrauben des Glücks”) begann schon im 19. Jahrhundert in der spanischen Mittel- und Oberschicht, die mit Champagner und Weintrauben in das neue Jahr feierten. Doch erst im Jahr 1909 wurde diese Tradition von einem Großteil der Bevölkerung übernommen. In diesem Jahr gab es großen Weintraubenüberschuss und spanische Bauern aus Alicante priesen die “Glücksweintrauben” zu Silvester an um ihre Ernte zu verkaufen. Mit der Zeit wurden die Weintrauben zu einer Silvestertradition und heutzutage sind sie fast obligatorisch. Die Weintrauben symbolisieren den Überschuss und sollen Glück bringe. Jede Person bekommt zwölf Weintrauben, die kurz vor 12 Uhr mit den letzten zwölf Glockenschlägen verzehrt werden. Und sollte man sich nicht verschluckt haben, kann man dann allen ein “Feliz Año Nuevo” wünschen!

Para el 31 de diciembre hay una gran variedad de opciones. Muchos hoteles de lujo organizan cenas de gala, hay fiestas de fin de año en bares y clubes y muchos pueblos y ciudades organizan fuegos artificiales y fiestas. Al igual que en otras partes del mundo se celebra con champán y fuegos artificiales. Sin embargo, hay una tradición española que también tiene una amplia difusión en las Islas Canarias. La tradición de las doce uvas de la suerte comenzó en el siglo XIX entre los burgueses españoles, que celebraban la Nochevieja con champán y uvas. Pero tardó hasta 1909 para que la tradición fuera adoptada por una mayoría de los españoles. En ese año hubo un gran excedente de uvas y al final del año los agricultores españoles de Alicante decidieron promocionar las “uvas de la suerte” para vender sus cosechas. Con el tiempo, las uvas se convirtieron en una tradición de Nochevieja y hoy en día son casi obligatorias. Las uvas simbolizan la prosperidad y la superstición dice que dan buena suerte. Cada persona recibe doce uvas, que se comen poco antes de las 12 al son de las últimas doce campanadas. Y quién no se atragantó en el intento, ¡ahora puede desear un Feliz Año Nuevo a todos!
