The Nativity scenes, called “Belenes”, are an important tradition in Spain and the Canary Islands. Their origins are found in the 14th century in Italy, where some churches were decorated with them, and then this custom spread to other Catholic countries, like Spain. Almost every household had its own lovingly constructed Nativity scene. Traditionally, the set up of the scenes started on 13 December and the baby Jesus was added on 25 December. But nowadays with the increased popularity of the Christmas tree, most Nativity scenes only consist of the most important figures. However, many churches and communities are trying to maintain this tradition with detailed and artistic Nativity scenes. The most spectacular one of the Canary Islands is located in Gran Canaria. The “Belén de Arena” in the capital city of Las Palmas is made with sand by international sculptors on the beach Playa de Las Canteras. This year, the work was done by six artists, who, in just eight days, transformed more than a thousand tons of fine sand into a spectacular artwork, which occupies about 2,000 square meters of the beach of Las Canteras. The Sand Nativity Scene is one of the city’s top attractions during the Christmas period and ensures that even the beach with its warm temperatures gets a little bit of Christmas flair! Die Weihnachtskrippen, genannt “Belenes”, sind eine wichtige Tradition in Spanien und auf den Kanarischen Inseln. Die Krippen haben ihren Ursprung im 14. Jahrhundert in Italien, wo in einigen Kirchen Weihnachtskrippen aufgebaut wurden, und verbreiteten sich dann in anderen katholischen Ländern, vor allem in Spanien. Fast jeder Haushalt verfügte über seine eigene liebevoll aufgebaute Weihnachtskrippe. Traditionsgemäß wurde die Weihnachtskrippe am 13. Dezember vollständig aufgebaut – nur das Jesuskind wurde erst am 25. Dezember hineingestellt. Doch heutzutage erfreut sich der Weihnachtsbaum immer größerer Beliebheit und die meisten Krippen bestehen nur noch aus den wichtigsten Figuren. Doch viele Kirchen und Gemeinden versuchen diese Tradition aufrechtzuerhalten mit detaillierten und künstlerischen Weihnachtskrippen. Die vielleicht Spektakulärste der Kanarischen Inseln befindet sich auf Gran Canaria. Das “Belén de Arena” in der Hauptstadt Las Palmas wird von internationalen Bildhauern aus Sand geformt. Dieses Jahr waren sechs Künstler am Werk, die in nur acht Tagen aus mehr als tausend Tonnen feinen Sand ein spektakuläres Kunstwerk gemacht haben, das ungefähr 2.000 Quadratmeter des Strands von Las Canteras einnimmt. Die Sandkrippe gehört zu einer der beliebtesten Attraktionen der Stadt während der Weihnachtszeit und sorgt dafür das auch der Strand mit seinen warmen Temperaturen einen weihnachtlichen Flair bekommt! Das “Belén de Arena” kann noch bis zum 7. Januar besucht werden – ein perfektes Ausflugsziel für ihren Urlaub auf Gran Canaria!

Sus orígenes se encuentran en la Italia del siglo XIV, donde se realizaron belenes en algunas iglesias, y a continuación esta tradición se extendió a otros países católicos, com España. Casi todos los hogares tenían su propio belén construido y decorado con cariño. Tradicionalmente, se comenzaba con la elaboración del belén el 13 de diciembre y el 25 de diciembre se colocaba el niño Jesús. Pero hoy en día, el árbol de Navidad es cada vez más popular y la mayoría de los belenes sólo constan de las figuras más importantes. Sin embargo, muchas iglesias y comunidades tratan de mantener esta tradición con belenes detallados y artísticos. El belén más espectacular de las Islas Canarias se encuentra en Gran Canaria. El Belén de Arena en la capital de Las Palmas es realizado por una serie de escultores internacionales en la Playa de Las Canteras. Este año el trabajo fue realizado por seis artistas, que en tan sólo ocho días transformaron más de mil toneladas de arena fina en una espectacular obra de arte, que ocupa unos 2.000 metros cuadrados de la playa de Las Canteras. El belén es una de las principales atracciones de la ciudad durante el período de Navidad y logra darle un toque navideño a la playa con sus temperaturas cálidas.
